What is Book & Claim and Why Does It Matter? 

An Efficient and Pragmatic Approach 

Book & Claim is unlocking the potential for more customers in more places to benefit from biofuels. 

Energy-intensive transportation and industrial sectors like aviation, shipping, and steel need solutions to help them meet growing demand with a responsible business strategy. These sectors are looking to renewable biofuels, such as sustainable aviation fuel and green hydrogen, to meet their energy demand and reduce emissions.  

However, these fuels are in short supply, and they’re often produced far from where they’ll be used, which means access has historically been limited. But the good news is that a chain-of-custody model called Book & Claim can help companies take advantage of these fuels, no matter where their operations are located.   

Book & Claim:  
  

  • Delivers emissions reduction benefits to Scope 1 and Scope 3 off-takers that may not want to take physical delivery of our fuel.   
  • Allows the environmental attributes of our fuels to be tracked and delivered separately from the fuel itself.     
  • Is recognized as a credible and necessary method to reduce supply chain emissions and scale the market for biofuels.   
  • Encompasses rigorous fuel quality certification, robust accounting and tracking frameworks to protect against double counting, and independent certification. 

How Does Book & Claim Work? 

Some of the world’s leading companies are currently using Book & Claim to reduce emissions from their air travel and transport through the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc). For example, Microsoft has committed to reducing over 400,000 tons of carbon emissions from its corporate air travel and supply chain cargo over the course of 10 years. This is the equivalent of the emissions from flying 824,053 economy-class passengers from Seattle to New York and back.   

Here’s how it works: We produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at our facility in Paramount, California. The SAF’s environmental attributes, including the value of its carbon reduction, are separated from the fuel itself so they can be calculated, tracked, and allocated to a company seeking to reduce its aviation emissions. This company now owns those environmental benefits, while the SAF itself is delivered to an airport close to our production facility and added to the supply chain. This not only minimizes the cost and logistical burden of fuel transport, but it also minimizes the emissions associated with moving the fuel. 

Why Is It So Important? 

Through Book & Claim, any business, in any sector and in any location, can reduce its aviation-related emissions, because companies can claim the environmental benefits without taking delivery of the physical fuel. This action from corporate leaders is an important step in helping to de-risk the investment needed to expand SAF production, which is essential to driving down cost, increasing adoption, and expanding the ancillary markets that biofuels support, such as agriculture and technology.

This approach is a new way of thinking. It’s most commonly used in aviation but is now being adapted for industries like shipping and steel.
